What happens when you have a hard-working, talented dream of a cast --that was so perfectly suited for their roles-- and then the financial carpet gets pulled from underneath them?
That's the question we faced Labor Day 2007. The 7 of us, as former members of a now defunct Los Angeles theatre company, knew we had the heart, the ambition, and the "Mickey and Judy" spirit ... we just didn't have all the know-how to bring the show to the stage.
We had a choice: we could either let the show, The Full Monty, die OR we could lose a week of our lives tirelessly exploring every avenue to find the support and resources we knew we needed.
Salvation came in the form of Marc Mercury and Mercury Theater Productions. One phone call to the vacationing (in Alaska!) Marc, and he was on board. Marc generously agreed to be the Executive Producer of The Full Monty, and singlehandedly provided the support we were seeking.
Then things really started to fall into place. Jeff Murray, owner of Theatre/Theater, generously gave us his space for a song, since we agreed to change our original scheduled performance dates. MTI (Music Theatre International) worked with us on securing the rights to legitimately perform the show. And, our dream of a cast re-arranged their lives to accomodate the new schedule.
At this point, we at Theatre 7 were just happy to get the show produced. Little did we know what a phenomenal hit we had on our hands. We opened to critical acclaim and sold out houses --so much so that we had no choice but to extend the show!
Originally, The Full Monty seemed like an impossibility --a one-time only thing-- but in the end, we found that this was just the beginning of our journey together. Theatre 7 was born.
